Brazilian Backyard BBQ

In honor of the Rio Olympics, I couldn't help but host a theme party (are we really surprised here?!)...  These flavors are the epitome of summer, party, tropical, color, spice, and fun!  I've certainly never been to Brazil (bucket list) but these flavors are exactly what I think of when I imagine a vacation there!

Sunset Shrimp Spectacular

The first summer my husband and I were married, we road-tripped to Key West on vacation, celebrating the end of my time of active duty service in the Navy. We stayed in a fabulous place that recommended the Tuesday Night Sunset Shrimp Spectacular. For $5, you were served steamed shrimp, corn-on-the-cob, and cole slaw, and ate standing up. But the sunset from the pier, steel drum bands, and street performers made the ambiance priceless. We "splurged" and bought a couple of $5 margaritas and later a $10 bucket of Corona long-necks. When my husband teased me about having champagne taste, I remind him that that $30 meal is in my top five best dinner dates!  In fact, it was such a memorable time, that when we later had another couple over for dinner, I recreated the experience at home.  The evening was a huge success and I even pulled it off for under $100 total!

This Month: Christmas Crafts and Homemade Gifts

Who doesn't love a homemade gift during the holiday season?  Not only are homemade goodies thoughtful and unique, they are especially cost-effective...which is a must when you've teachers, neighbors, co-workers, and Secret Santas included in your Christmas Present Budget!  This month, we're breaking away from traditional recipes and holiday meal plans and given suggestions on fabulous gifts to have on hand for a hostess gift or stocking stuffer.  What are your favorite homemade gifts?  Share ideas in the comments below.  And remember, it's the season of giving, not receiving, and it's the thought that counts, not the amount on the price tag!  Merriest of Christmases and Happiest of New Years!

This Month: Super Bowl Sunday

I know the Super Bowl isn't for quite some time, but my family much prefers college football to pro, so I thought I'd get this party started in time for the college play-offs!  Besides, my beloved Irish only have a few more games in regular season, so I need to get my act together in order to enjoy the last few games of the year.  After traveling to two games this year (both wins!) I'm pumped for my boys to finish strong.  These snacks are sure to "shake down the thunder" as we say in South Bend!  Whether you're putting together the ultimate tailgate, hosting a happy hour, or just looking for some great snacks, these idea are sure to be the winners at your next sporty soiree!

This Month: Oktoberfest

The weather is finally starting to cool off, the leaves are changing color, and football has reclaimed my Saturday afternoons.  My family spends weekends in apple orchards and pumpkin patches.  What better way to celebrate one of my favorite seasons than with a special Oktoberfest meal?!  Throw on your favorite sweater and boots, toss a plaid tablecloth on the kitchen table, pour your favorite German brew, and get ready for a great meal!

This Month: Fondue Party

My husband and I met just over ten years ago.  For our first Valentine's Day together, we were also facing the beginning of a long-distance relationship, just a few months after our first date.  We were both Active Duty Navy and he was transferring to another state.  He asked what I wanted to do for Valentine's Day, and, longing to do something different, I suggested fondue.  He made reservations, we had a lovely evening, and the next day he left for Ohio.  For Valentine's Day two years ago, we had a toddler and I was weeks away from my due date with baby number two.  We opted to stay in for dinner, and I took it upon myself to recreate that first Valentine's meal.  I know it seems strange to post a Valentine memory in September, but it's the perfect date night meal for a crisp autumn evening!  Enjoy!

This Month: Seafood Soirée

This time last year, I was gearing up to graduate from Nursing School.  As a graduation present, my mama treated me to a Girly Getaway to Charleston, South Carolina, which was a new destination for me.  I did a ton of research deciding where we should eat, what we should see, and must-have items that I just had to buy while I was in the low country!  The hotel where we stayed had a fabulous rooftop bar where we'd enjoy cocktails and snacks each evening.  On our second night there, Mama suggested we try the mussels, but then, worried that I wouldn't like them at all, she changed her mind.  I looked at the menu, and with an adventurous sparkle in my eye, told my mom, "Yes, let's try the mussels!"  Well, I was hooked and loved them.  When I returned home to Northern Virginia, I couldn't wait to make them for my husband as a special treat.  Fearing he wouldn't like them (guess I really am like my mama!) I saved the meal for when we had guests so he wouldn't be able to complain.  Turns out I was worried over nothing; he loved the meal and couldn't wait to have them again!

This Month: Bunco Night!

I live in the suburbs, drive an SUV, and I play Bunco. Every month, my Bunco group gets together for a couple of hours of ladies-only, no kids (or husbands) girl time fun. We roll the dice, drink wine, catch up, and laugh the evening away. With twelve ladies in the group, we all chip in each month. The hostess provides dessert and paper goods. Each of the remaining ladies contribute either a bottle of wine or an hors d'oeuvre to share.  I try to always mix up what I bring, opting to stay away from familiar chips and dips if I can help it.  This month, I'll be sharing a few of my recent contributions, and hope to inspire you in the next dish you bring to share at a game night, pot luck, or book club get together!

This Month: Meals on Wheels

Growing up military, my mama taught me to always look out for my friends and neighbors.  She's from the midwest, too, so hospitality runs deep in her veins.  Anytime a neighbor was sick, a friend had had a baby, or someone had lost a loved one, Mama was the first person to head to the grocery, pick up a bunch of throw-away foil containers, and pack up a meal for a family in need.  And she didn't just stop at a dish of lasagna or a basket of muffins.  Mama made the whole meal!  It was delivered completely cooked with instructions on how to reheat.  My husband's in the military too, and we've lived 3000 miles away from family, so I know how it feels to feel helpless and need someone to look out for you.  I know what it's like to have a newborn plus a toddler and no family around, freshly home from the hospital and wondering how you'll get food on the table.  Or right after a foot surgery when hopping on one foot and hobbling on crutches just don't mix with cooking.  Or when you've just moved and nothing's unpacked and there's no food in the fridge.  Here's an easy meal you can whip up and deliver to anyone who might need it.  The bonus is that everything doubles easily, so you can make dinner for your own family at the same time!

This Month: Cinco de Mayo

Even though summer doesn't officially begin until late June, warm weather celebrations are abundant in May! Derby Day, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, and Cinco de Mayo! As if I really need another excuse to throw a party! The warmer weather has rejuvenated my need to cook...  I feel compelled to incorporate fresh produce like cilantro and citrus, spicy flavors of chiles, and bright colors of the tropics on my table.  Sort of like when fall creeps up and I get excited to wear my sweaters and boots again...only this time it's flip flops and tank tops. And cilantro and citrus (wait, did I already say that?!). I love warm weather food, I love Mexican food, and I love a good theme party. Here's a little something different from your typical taco dinner to celebrate Cinco de Mayo...

This Month: Chinese New Year

I don't know a whole lot about Chinese astrology, or even the Chinese New Year. But I do know that I occasionally love Chinese take-out, that crab rangoon is the eighth wonder of the world, and that even though I'm not of Chinese decent, I love any excuse for a themed meal! So this year, I plan to celebrate the Year of the Goat like no body's business! Who knows? Maybe we'll start a new tradition at my house! Chinese New Year falls on February 19th this year, right after Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday, so it'll be a week of celebrations and special meals in my kitchen! Enjoy!
